Keeping your filament dry can be critical for some 3D printing filament types. I ran into this problem when I started printing with Polycarbonate. That’s why I developed this kit with which you can turn any clear plastic box, zip lock bag, or even the original bag the filament came in into a nifty little filament dry container. The kit includes everything needed to create a functional dry container other than the bag/box itself.
This kit is an effective no hassle way of making a simple dry container that doesn’t take up a lot of space and works with all different kinds of filaments and containers.
The kit includes the following
- A filament roll holder/stand with 608 bearings. Adjustable in width to fit any normal filament roll. Collapsible into a small size.
- A Bowden tube pass through with a tightening nut to provide an airtight passage for the Bowden tube.
- A half meter length of normal Bowden tube for 1.75 mm filament.
- A moisture sensor to tell you the moisture inside the container and when to change your desiccant.
- A few bags of rechargeable desiccant to keep the inside of the container dry.
Instructions for usage
Using the dry container kit is very easy, just follow these steps.
- Remove the new filament roll from the bag in which is came. Careful not to destroy the bag if it is a resealable type as it can be used to create a dry bag!
- Dry the filament overnight in an oven or other dryer to make sure that the filament is dry, some rolls come wet from the factory. Careful not to set the oven temperature too high! You can also recharge the desiccant at the same time.
- Take your container of choice and make a small hole near the bottom edge. Pass the Bowden through the hole and tighten the nut.
- Slide the moisture sensor on the Bowden tube inside the container. Then put the filament stand inside and attach it to the end of the Bowden tube.
- Push the filament through the Bowden from the inside, place the roll inside the bag and then seal the bag. Don’t forget the desiccant!
Silica gel desiccant can generally achieve around ~10% moisture so when you see your moisture meter read close to 10% you will know that everything is correct. Reaching the low moisture level may take some time (1-2 hour). Recharge the desiccant in the oven when you notice the moisture level rising.
The parts of the kit are printed from PETG plastic, please don’t put them in the oven.
